How to Release a Stuck 4-Post Lift Cylinder
A hydraulic cylinder on a 4-post automotive lift may occasionally arrive from the factory in a fully retracted position. This is normal, but if the ram becomes stuck, you must follow the instructions below to release it safely.
Why the Cylinder May Be Stuck
During storage and shipping, moisture, vibration, and lack of lubrication can create friction between internal seals and surfaces. This prevents the ram from extending normally. This is not a defect — the ram simply requires lubrication and controlled force to move for the first time.
Tools & Materials Needed
- Air compressor (90–100 PSI)
- Grease or penetrating lubricant
- Basic hand tools
- Ratchet strap (only if needed)
- Second person (recommended)
Step-by-Step Procedure
1. Remove Cable Tension and Hydraulic Lines
Disconnect all hydraulic lines and relieve cable tension from the cylinder to prevent accidental pressure buildup.
2. Remove the Plastic Tube from the Rear Quick-Connect Fitting
Locate the plastic tube attached to the quick-connect fitting on the rear end of the cylinder and remove it. This component is no longer used and should not be reinstalled.
3. Lubricate the Cylinder Ram
Apply grease or lubricant along the length of the exposed ram to reduce friction during extension.
4. Lubricate the Bracket Slide Areas
Apply grease to the contact surfaces where the cylinder bracket slides along the lift runways.
5. Apply Compressed Air to the Quick-Connect Fitting
Connect your air source (90–100 PSI) to the rear fitting. Air pressure will help push the ram outward in a controlled manner.
6. Assist the Ram Manually (If Needed)
You may need a second person to pull outward on the ram while air pressure is applied.
7. Use a Ratchet Strap (Last Resort Only)
If the ram still does not move, attach a ratchet strap from the cylinder’s mounting bracket to the opposite side of the lift frame to help pull it outward.
After the Ram Is Released
- Reconnect hydraulic lines
- Cycle the lift under no load to ensure smooth movement
- Adjust cable tension as needed
- Inspect for leaks or binding
Once released and lubricated, the cylinder should operate normally without repeated sticking.
